BACKGROUND

In addition to support for core KDP activities, these resources will enable the implementation of an environmental strategy aimed at achieving more sustainably-managed lands and natural resources in rural Sulawesi. The strategy includes mainstreaming environmental considerations and sustainable natural resource use into KDP village-level investment choices, as well as a targeted “window” for village level grants This should lead to projects that are not only environmentally benign but that also proactively improve the environmental situation in and around project villages and surrounding areas. Maintaining and improving the natural capital is an important component for maintaining and improving natural resource related livelihoods, rural economies, and the security of rural populations. Environmental results and gender equality aspects of this pilot will be carefully monitored.
