The meeting, with the theme of Coordination and Synchronization of Community Driven Development, aimed to evaluate the progression of development cooperation between the government and international development partners in Papua and West Papua, collect information on smart practices, obstacles and opportunities, and create a plan for the future. The preparation meeting was held on the first day and was attended by 40 international development partners and 30 government agencies. The participants divided into small groups based on sectors such as public finance management, village development (RESPEK), health/HIVAIDS, education, natural resource management and coordination mechanisms. Every group formulated concrete recommendations for 2008 that will be followed up by the provincial and central governments as well as the international development partners.
On the second day, the Vice Governors of Papua and West Papua explained the plans and priorities of the Provincial Government for 2008; this was accompanied by suggestions from representatives from the Ministry of National development Planning, the Department of Health, the National Department of Education, the Department of Public Works, the Coordinating Ministry of Economy and Industry, and the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare. Ambassadors and Country Directors of international development organizations also presented initiatives that were implemented since September 2006.
International development partners also visited and directly witnessed activities in a community health center that provides pre-school education and a cocoa plantation in Yokiwa village, Sentani Timur sub-district, Jayapura district. During the visit, the representatives spoke seriously with the Bupati of Jayapura, the health center workers and the chocolate farmers regarding the obstacles they face and their hopes for the future.
A number of recommendations were made for RESPEK, education, health, public finance management and natural resource management which will require hard work and cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the recommendations are implemented well and responsibly as a new innovation for the future of the Papuan people.
